For all those devoted fans of the long defunct (1989) Los Angeles area
cable station, THE Z CHANNEL, there's a fine documentary called "Z
CHANNEL - A MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION" that is playing in theaters in
L.A.. Also, it will be on IFC (INDEPENDENT FILM CHANNEL financed the
film) sometime in the near future. It's directed by John Cassevetes'
daughter, Xan.

ALSO, does anybody know of a WEBSITE devoted, at least in major part,
to the beloved Z CHANNEL ???????????

I remember Z Channel very well and still have some rare film videos that I
taped from the station. As I recall, didn't the guy who ran the station
commit suicide?

Actually, it's worse than THAT. It was a Murder-Suicide. Right at the
same time a media group tried to combine movies and sports on the same
channel, pretty much sealing Z's fate. Movies were phased out within a
year.

FNN - Financial News Network (network)
(business news cable network)

launched:
November 1981

ceased operation:
June 1991

subscribers (Jun. 1991):
36.6 million

One of the casualties of the cable network wars was FNN, a
well-regarded network devoted to business news, stock market reports,
and programs about personal money management. Although it never had a
large audience, it was a favorite of business professionals, and it
pioneered the idea of a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen,
continuously reporting current stock prices. Among it's series were
'FNN Money Talks' and 'The Insiders' with Jack Anderson.

Ironically FNN fell prey to a financial scandal similar to those that
rocked Wall Street (its chief subject) in the late-'80s. In the
early-'90s allegations were made of financial mismanagement and the
network was forced into bankruptcy. A lively bidding war for its
assets ensued; some bidders intended to put its affairs in order and
continue operation. The bidding, however, was by its chief competitor,
CNBC (owned by G.E. - General Electric), which was trailing in
viewership. The new owner shut down the network, fired its employees,
and took over its channel space on cable systems around the country.
